ABOUT ME

California is my home; France is my heart; China is my food; and Switzerland is my kids. English is my first language.

I'll be honest. I am highly unqualified to raise kids and even less qualified to give advice on how to do it. I never took a class in child psychology or child development. I didn't even babysit as a teenager. I taught English to university students in China and coached a couple gymnastics classes but this hardly counts as "training" for the real life challenges of raising kids. My sister is a teacher so at least I have someone to turn to for theory, resources and advice on what not to give teachers for Christmas (go for the gift card).

Like many people, I'm learning as I go and it's a steep learning curve. This is made more difficult by the fact that there's no guidebook for raising kids in a foreign country, far from family, friends, and familiar things from home. My kids are being raised in a place with rules and customs different from my own, leaving me to figure out my own way.

I don't have any answers but I hope that anyone reading this website finds comfort in knowing they aren't alone, maybe a few useful tips and at a minimum, has a good laugh every once in a while. I'll apologise in advance for any cultural insensitivity or generalisations - it's all in good fun and part of learning.

And for more basic info: I grew up in Northern California, studied international affairs, and currently work as a journalist in Switzerland. I have two kids - a boy (9 years old) and a girl (7 years old).
